Just how organic is your organic milk?
If you’ve been inside any grocery store in the US in the last 5-10 years you’ve surely noticed that buying milk is no longer the easy decision of whole vs skim. Today, our choices can include whole milk, 2%, 1%, skim, raw milk, goat milk, sheep milk, chocolate milk, soy milk, rice milk, almond milk, coconut milk, hemp milk, condensed milk, powdered milk, organic milk, hormone free milk, milk with cream on the top and more.
Now my recommendation in all this is to bypass all of that and simply go with raw, organic whole milk from a trusted farmer’s market or co-op if possible but between our busy lives and the FDA's meddling, it's not always possible for it to be that simple. So instead, if you want milk, you have to go to a grocery store where you will not only be met by all the options above but also several identical looking brands that all claim to be from the most humble, organic, and cow loving family farms in all the land...
But are they really identical? The answer is a resounding NO. Don't fret though, the Cornucopia Institute has you covered!
For years now, the Cornucopia Institute has been keeping tabs on the industry and rating them by their cow loving small farm organicness. As of today, they have about 100 organic milk and dairy companies rated by things like the health of the herd, how much grazing they do, who inspects the farm and products, how open the companies are with information, and whether they really are that family farm they say they are or a factory farm raising thousands of disease ridden cattle (like Horizon-the top organic dairy company in the US).
There is quite a bit of research that goes into this list and I recommend it become part of your decision making process the next time you are at the store buying organic milk or dairy. After all, going organic isn’t exactly cheap so why not make sure that those you give that extra money to really using it to go the extra mile for you and their animals.
